A too small or underdeveloped chin can have a negative influence on the overall appearance. With a too small chin the nose appears much more prominent than it would otherwise and the aesthetics of the face are compromised. It is possible to correct this problem successfully with chin augmentation or chin enlargement. The incision for the operation is placed intra-orally (inside the mouth). This means that no visible scars are left by the chin augmentation. The lower part of the chin bone can be removed, shifted forward in a natural position and fixed (reassembled) in a new position. Another way to enhance a small chin is the insertion of special chin implants usually consisting of silicon or latex material. The implants have a special textured surface that allows them to be fixed and to be stabilized by the surrounding tissue.

Surgery by means of implants is the easiest way to obtain augmentation of the chin. However, there is a certain risk that the implant will not stabilize perfectly in the surrounding tissue. In such a case, a secondary operation could be necessary in order to fix the problem.
